Commander sounds like an interesting format to me, but I've yet to try it because the cards keep driving me away - Before devoting a lot of time to working out a strategy, I have to consider all the experience that I have being dissatisfied with the results of my attempts to dominate Standard. I have made quite a few unique designs that gave me great command over my opponents, but orchestrating them always turns out to be flimsy - the decks being commonly used are simply too extreme. As for this land, I'll point out the obvious: It would be a powerful addition in the case that your commander was muchas multi-colored, ideally a 3 or 5 color identity. However, the format rules that only basic lands will be allowed in numbers larger than 1 in your deck. So... 1 random Command Tower is not as beneficial as it would be if you could have 4. In which case, using a muchas multi-colored card for your commander should not weigh heavily on your decision - the bonus is rather weak. You might be better off using a mono-colored commander, and reap the benefits of having perfect land. The point of Command Tower would be to make you more versatile. I'd like to see this work, but the limitation destroys the potential benefit of its existence. Why make such a mediocre card? It just seems to me that things haven't been balanced properly. While having a more prismatic setup does inherently lend a lot of power, only one Command Tower is probably insufficient. What if a new type were created, giving an exception to the rule? 4 of every non-basic land available would be too much, but only 1 is too little. What if you could use, say, 3 Command Towers in your deck. Other non-basics should likely be left at 1, but Command Tower, being a Commander-specific card, might be granted a special ruling, to allow for a better balance and dynamic in this format. |
